Speedball's back! To Bounce Or Not To Bounce-

-That darn cat...
I know I've mentioned how great this 6-page Speedball back-up story from The New Warriors Annual #1 is somewhere before... An old video? Or comment-section somewhere???
Anyways- that's not important...
I think that it's so entertaining that I've decided to just post the entire damn thing here so you can all check it out. -In honor of the All-New Marvel NOW! New Warriors relaunch:

-more after the jump-

Speedball with SPIKES?!?  Remember- this was from 1991!  Oh, the shadows of things to come!!!

You heard the man!

I like how Spidey thinks he's a suicidal jumper and pretty-much just goes: Don't do that. Bye!
Poster-child he ain't!:

You know, after he was "saved" by She-Hulk; I was just waiting for him to motorboat her in gratitude.

BEWWWBS!

Fucking. Hilarious.

Now, GO READ SOME COMICS!!!

  1. well I don't know this Don Hudson artist is and even though he's not quite at Mark Bagley's level he's still pretty good. Speedball looks far better drawn by either of the before mentioned artists then in a more "charmingly awful" style : )

    1. John Calimee is the artist here- he has worked on Alpha Flight, Dreadstar, Starman, and Nexus... I have some of his Alpha Flight, and Starman issues. He does seem to have a little early Mark Bagley influence. -Probably the other way around, actually. Calimee was working in comics first. He's not bad at all though... but no one can hang with charmingly awful. Charmingly awful just fits the character so well!

  2. speaking of charmingly awful . . . or just plain awful actually have you seen today's posting from Mr. Morbid?

  3. Posted here before, but the damn thing didn't save.

Anyhoo, to Shlomo: Naw naw naw boo boo, stick your head in doo doo;)

Alas poor Speedball, the post-Civil War era did not treat thee kindly. I get what Paul Jenkins was trying to do, and it kinda worked in Ellis' Thunderbolts series, but overall, not a smart move. Just doesn't fit the character no matter how forced all that angst was.

He should just be what Steve Ditko intended him to be.......a fun oddity that hopefully is even 1/10th as popular as Spider-Man. Mission accomplished?

    Btw, loving that anti-anti-suicide banner.
    Oh Spidey, you ham you:)

    1. Thanks, man- that suicide-prevention ad was a VERY last minute addition... This was already posted and then I got the idea- I just had to Photoshop something up real quick- because, other than the snark- it's a real poster that http://allianceforsuicideprevention.org/about-suicide has. Glad you got a kick out of it. -I think it might actually work too!
"a fun oddity that hopefully is even 1/10th as popular as Spider-Man. Mission accomplished?" HAHAHA!!! -Classic. I actually liked the Penance storyline a lot. If you click on him up there- it will take you to a three-part blog over at arousinggrammar.com, that takes you through his entire journey, that I found extremely well put-together.

  4. LOL I always loved that Marvel Boy knew how many heroes were in Manhattan. He should've been the straight guy to Robbie's jokes more often! The screen in that panel even has the Penance costume sketch round one :)

I knew this was funny, but it isn't till it was posted here I realised it was by Dan Slott, the man who has made Spider-Man funny again at last. See what you realise when someone saves you the hassle of getting exhausted opening the plastic bag?

    1. DUDE! -I never even noticed that on the screen! HA! Fucking awesome! I just glossed right over it- like it was just a burst-pattern in the background! Holy shit... Well, good trade-off... you showed me that Easter-egg... and I pointed out to you that it was a Dan Slott.
Yeah, Justice is such a tool. For some reason that line always makes me think of the 37 dicks line from Clerks. At least- that's the inflection I use to read it. Too bad it was not one hundred and thirty-seven super heroes, because then I could actually make that joke work.

  5. Speedballs your guy.?. I was a New Warrior as well. Can't really remember where it all went wrong but it did. Anyway this is a nice shout out to Speedball. I saw the cover to the new New Warriors title, it's not exactly geared to me but since the big two tend to change their universes continuity so often; I hope they bring back Knight Thrasher, Silhouette and Midnights Fire.

    1. Yeah, Speedball was one of the first comics I ever bought... So, I've always had a soft-spot for him... I read New Warriors all through its run. Loved that title, so glad it's back! -And I'm sure they will all be back in it at some point or another... if Marvel does not cancel the book after a year and a half like they have been doing.

  8. Hey King - I've done mine. It's a tribute to one of my favourite ever comic covers, but I think I've changed it up enough to make it fresh at the same time. Hope you like it!

O.A. - Silhouette would be great to come back. She got a pretty decent gig in Civil War - bigger almost than most icons did - then boom back into nothing. She was always smart but with dark spooky powers which I had her tick all the boxes in my book. Especially between the Middle East Wars and the Poison Memories trilogy. Great, great stuff.

  9. Guys I got something on paper but it's incomplete. If it's OK with the crew lets set the postings to next Friday. It'll give me time to do a complete picture. That may give Dale and Shlomo time as well.

This will also give us time to coordinate the drawings and post descriptions with each other for the post up on each one of our Blogs.

K.O.T. this was cool as hell man and I think you may have started something good. work with me fellas.

Okay, man... that's fine by me. I'll try and let everyone know real quick. I can throw something else together for my Thursday post. Art must prevail!

So, NEXT Friday- March 7th, then? Cool cool cool.

  10. I try to see that Spidey scene as Spider-Man thinking (erroneously) that Robbie had fallen by accident, not on purpose. Still, he should have checked or taken an extra 10 seconds to preach a little more, but I cannot see him as just saying what he did if he thought it was a suicide attempt.

Still, the anti-suicide ad with Spidey joke works pretty well.

    1. Yeah- it was totally just Spidey joking... I hope.
