What did the five fingers say to the face?

So, what happens when you smack Boom-Boom right across her face?

Why, like any good woman, she develops a crush on you- of course!:
(Fallen Angels #4)

*cough*

-What an amazing reference in Hellstorm- Prince of Lies #2:
"God's a kid with an ant farm, lady. He's not planning anything."
-Sorry, I love that movie...
"We are not children of celestial fuckin' light, walkin' arm-in-arm into the Age of Aquarius. We are wankers who wreck the planet an' piss on each other, 'til half the world's starvin' an' the other half's busy findin' new ways to keep from noticin' it. That's the fuckin' limit've our potential, believe me."

Speaking of awesome references- This scene from The Badger #3 (1983) makes me smile, not just from the parodistic social-commentary but, because of that hilarious Cerebus bit:
Also, every 'bad thing' this guy says that comics contain- I have demonstrated examples of in this very blog. And it has only been around for under a month!!! (That's your cue to go check out past postings...)

  1. I'm pretty sure Hellstorm's talking about another dude with Hell in his title, Hellblazer, John Constantine. Nice one.

Boom Boom's example is clearly fucked up. Idk if it was revealed back then, but years later, we'd find out just what a troubled past she had. Her father sexually, verbally, and physically-abused her, plus she was forced to trick to make money. So yeah, that panel, intentionally or not, shows just how screwed up she was back then.

    2. You are correct, Sir! He damn sure was...

I did not know that about Boom Boom at all! And I know a lot about comics- so I am shocked! Do you happen to know when and where this was revealed? Because I wonder if this was intricately layered character development from the start, or just standard misogyny and sexism that conveniently ties into what they eventually did with the character? Occam's razor, my guess is the latter. Still- it's very interesting and requires further research on my part. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

  2. X-Force had the makings of something real special back then. It seems like the characters took to long to develop into a concrete teenage super team like the Titans. X-Force was definitely a good ride while it lasted as was Cyclops's X-factor.

    1. I just never could get into X-Force (EXCEPT for the X-Statix version). I tried a few times- I had a lot of issues from different parts of its run... I just could not bring myself to care. But I only liked 2 members of the team, so you'll have that.
Now- X-Factor: I loved. But not the early Cyclops team... I liked the Government Team: Havok, Multiple Man, Polaris, Quicksilver, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane... That was a good run- Peter David, J. M. DeMatteis...

    2. I liked Havok's team as well, at one time I was everything X. However, the first team brought the first appearance of En Sabah Nur and the world would never be the same.

    3. Apocalypse IS the shit!
Yeah- I was all about the X-books too, back in the day- I just got so tired of all the dangling plot-lines, unanswered questions, needless crossovers, and snails-pace storytelling. I know all comics are guilty of this sometimes (especially/eventually Spider-Man)- but the X-titles SET THE BAR.

    4. And that's what turned me away from them. Right now we still don't know where Blade is and his purpose or place as an X-man. Scalp Hunter ... the same thing, he was there on the kick off of X-Island and we haven't seen him since.

  3. I think the issues not too long after Boomer joined the New Mutants, and definitely later on during the mid-90's run of X-Force was this brought up.I'd check out the years Jeph Loeb(yes Jeph Loeb) wrote X-Force. '96-2000 I believe. Also #328 of Uncanny X-men. This is when Boom Boom fell for Sabertooth while he was playing the amnesia victim after Wolverine popped his claws into his brain. Anyhoo, that issue is where Boomer really opens up about the past abuse she suffered at her dad's hands. She really was trailer-park trash for awhile there, poor kid:(

I loved Peter Davids's X-factor run myself. Great team, especially the issue where Doc Samson gives each team member a psychological profile. Funny as shit and very insightful. #86 or 88 i believe.

    1. I forgot all about those Jeph Loeb issues!!! Damn, I'm slipping in my old age. I even used to have them! -Boomer was bringing Sabretooth saucers of milk! Ha! Those were pretty damn good. -I don't remember exactly how that plot-thread ended but I do remember being disappointed that it was kind of anticlimactic... As most Loeb stories end up.
So Google tells me her Dad started beating her when her powers first manifested- like he was trying to 'beat the mutant out of her'. And it got SO bad, after she tried to defend herself once, that she ran away from home... and joined the Fallen Angels! So- her actions do track with the above that Jo Duffy wrote. Yeah- poor girl...

      Hell yeah, X-Factor!
X-Factor #87: X-Amination is the Doc Samson issue. (For anyone unfamiliar: http://www.leaderslair.com/mutiescum/x-factor087.html) AND in 2007 David did it again in X-Factor Vol 3 #13: Re-X-Aminations!!! Cool stuff, for sure!
